Huelva: The city and surrounding places
Huelva is a coastal city in southwestern Spain, where the estuaries of Odiel and Tinto Rivers converge.
The town is surrounded by a wide tidal system including extensive salt marshes that constitute a protected natural environment. Near the city the longest beaches of Spain are developed with a continuity of more than 120 km long.
The city of Huelva, due to its privileged location, is a crossroads between the southwest of Spain and the Portuguese Algarve and for centuries it has been a gateway to the Atlantic that has served as communication with Mediterranean civilizations and the Americas. Currently, access to the city has a modern road network that connects it with the neighboring provinces of Seville and Badajoz, as well as with the Algarve region.
Huelva’s coastal location and its physical characteristics made possible the establishment and development of important cultures of native and foreign origin, which is why today it is considered the oldest city in the Western Europe. Just, in ancient times, its location in an open estuary allowed its port to serve as an outlet for the resources of the mines through Huelva, which was an attraction for the installation on its lands of an important Tartessian enclave that since the 19th century XI BC it served as a commercial link with the Greeks and Phoenicians, who were later followed by the Carthaginians and Romans. In the Middle Ages, the city was displaced to the neighboring city of Saltés Island, once again occupying a privileged space with access to the sea. During the Renaissance, the rise of marine knowledge was led by the sailors of this province. In those times, Huelva and the neighboring towns such as Palos de la Frontera, became, due to their ties with the sea, protagonists of the discovery of America in 1492. The Contemporary Age is marked by the sale of the Riotinto Mines to the English, which represents a new mode of economic and cultural colonization in the Victorian era. The current configuration of the city is marked by the fact of the English presence at the end of the 19th century.

Huelva: the climate
Huelva’s climate is especially pleasant. Being close to the coast, its temperatures are never extremely cold or hot since the sea breeze is responsible for softening its afternoons. It has more than 300 days of sunshine a year, which makes it the Spanish province with the brightest climate and the greatest number of hours of sunshine, exceeding 3000 hours. In the last weeks of June, summer temperatures are already maintained, between 25 and 30 degrees.
Huelva: gastronomy
The cuisine of Huelva has its strong point in the fresh fish and seafood that are sold every day in the markets and that can be purchased in the popular El Carmen market.
Typical of Huelva and well known outside our borders are cuttlefish, coquinas and white prawns, although tiger prawns, lobsters, crab bodies and chirlas are also of the highest quality.
As for elaborate dishes, tasty sea dishes such as cuttlefish with broad beans, monkfish in white wine, skate with paprika or rice with lobster are very characteristic of Huelva.
The seafood products are joined by the Iberian meats from Andévalo and the delicious sausages from the Sierra de Aracena, among which the famous Jabugo ham stands out.
All of this seasoned with cheerful wines with the Condado of Huelva designation of origin.
All of this has led to Huelva being designated as the Spanish capital of Gastronomy 2016.
